The Application Process

To become a TDI-certified data scientist, you first have to apply.

Our application is broken into three parts:

We'll ask you all the usual questions about your education and work experience, your preferences for part-time or full-time, and other details that help us determine if you meet the basic qualifications for the program.

You must have at least one of the following:

  • A Master's degree completed before the program begins
  • A PhD degree completed before the program begins
  • A PhD degree that will be completed within 3 months of the conclusion of the program
  • Extensive experience in a data-related position

Application dates for the next cohort:

  • Early decision application deadline: July 09, 2021
  • Regular application deadline: July 30, 2021

Classes start on September 20, 2021.

We highly encourage you to apply by the early decision date. We view applications on a first come, first served basis, and the sooner you get yours in, the better chance you have of moving forward.

Once you've completed your application - and you have to finish the general application on time to move forward - you'll move to the coding challenge.

This coding challenge is designed for you to show off your current abilities. You'll get 72 hours to complete the challenge once you start, so make sure you're prepared to give it your all. Depending on when you apply (early vs. regular deadline), you may have more time to schedule your challenge.

Keep in mind: You don't have to finish all of the challenges, but you do need to do as much as you can. We look at the quality of your work as well as the quantity. And make sure you save as you go. You can always come back and continue your work anytime during the challenge open dates. But the last time you save is the version we'll look at.

We'll also ask you to propose your capstone project. But don't worry - you have time before the interview to solidify your capstone idea. Just give us an overview of what you'd like to do, and why.

After the coding challenge, we'll contact the most promising candidates to set up a time for an online interview with our instructors and staff.

Those who show the most promise during the entire application process are awarded one of our limited tuition-free spots, so put your best foot forward. Tell us about the capstone project you have in mind, and why you think you're the right candidate for the program.

Check out this handy infographic to get some of our best tips and tricks for doing well during your interview.

Tuition-free spots are limited, but that's not the only way to attend our program. We now offer income sharing agreements, which allow you to pay your tuition after you've secured a job and are earning more than $40,000 per year. Check out the details.

Brian Farris

"The most valuable thing I got out of The Data Incubator was the ability to meet people from industry through the partner panels and happy hours. [It] was an extremely efficient way to do a lot of networking in a short amount of time, which greatly increases the chance of finding a job. It is much easier to initiate a dialogue with a hiring partner if you have already met someone from the company in person."

Xia Hong

"Completing miniprojects on diverse and up-to-date topics really helped me to be confident about how to apply my technical skills to solve problems in practical situations. The hands-on experience from end to end, especially the relevance of the techniques to that in industry, is going to be a long-term benefit for me and certainly for any previous and current Fellow."
