Three-hour Online Python Workshop

The Data Incubator's Introduction to Python for Data Science online workshop is an introductory 3-hour, evening workshop that provides students with an immersive hands-on experience using Python for data analytics and other data science techniques. This workshop is taught LIVE online, and students are provided with video of the workshop to review the material whenever they want.

This 3-hour workshop introduces students to the fundamental concepts in Python that are used for practical, hands-on data science. By the end of the workshop, students will be prepared to take on The Data Incubator's 8-week Data Science Foundations course. The workshop is appropriate for students with no prior background in Python. Students with prior knowledge in Python will also find this workshop useful for familiarizing themselves with Python’s data science capabilities. This workshop covers: Python basics and syntax, integrating popular Python packages for data analysis, a brief intro to building data models with Python.

Students who take our Introduction to Python workshop qualify for a special tuition credit on our 8-week Data Science Foundations course for the cost of this workshop.

Curriculum

Prerequisites:

  • Basic technical ability, comfort with computers, and desire to learn new tools
  • Minimal experience using computers for analysis or repeated tasks (like formulas or macros in Excel)
  • No installation necessary! All course material is online - students only need internet access and a laptop with an internet browser (like Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox)

This course is for you if:

  • You are interested in the field of data science and want to learn essential data science skills
  • You are new to Python and don't know where to start learning Python for data science
  • You are a Data Analyst, Economist, or Researcher who works with large data sets and wants to make analysis easier and more effective with Python
  • You're interested in taking TDI's Data Science Foundations online course or applying to TDI's Data Science Fellowship program

Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Write and run Python code for data analysis in data science notebooks (data cleaning and reformatting, exploration, analysis).
  • Understand the fundamental open-source data science libraries in Python and their roles, strengths, and weaknesses for data analysis (including: NumPy, Matplotlib, scikit-learn, & more).

This is a hands-on workshop. Students will be immersed in code, and develop scripts & notebooks, which they can take home for future use.
